Volunteer

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t. Join our national network of volunteer tutors and help narrow the attainment gap for disadvantaged young people.

Whether you choose to tutor online from home or face-to-face at a local school, your knowledge and encouragement can transform a child’s confidence, grades, and future options.

Do you remember a teacher or a mentor who changed your life arc? Today, thousands of capable, bright pupils are falling behind simply because private tutoring is a luxury their families cannot afford. We believe a child’s background should never limit their aspirations. By giving just one hour a week, you can help unlock a brighter future.

At Action Tutoring, our volunteers come from all walks of life. We are a diverse community of university students, corporate employees using their workplace volunteering hours, and retired professionals looking to share their lifetime of knowledge.

Youcef, volunteer tutor

I think it’s really important to give back to your local community, and I can think of no better way of doing this than giving a small amount of my time to help less affluent kids with their education through tutoring. Not coming from London, tutoring also gives me the opportunity to engage with my local community, which is important to me. Tutoring is one of the few things I do that gives me real satisfaction, enjoyment, and self-fulfilment.

The programme coordinators are always friendly, super approachable, and have been extremely supportive with any enquiries I’ve had. They host weekly post-session debriefs where you get a chance to share how the session went, meet fellow tutors, discuss any issues you might have faced, and receive feedback.

I love how tutoring helps pupils discover their likes and what interests them. It’s brilliant chatting to pupils about their favourite football team or music they listen to.

Each session always feels well-run. It’s great how much Action Tutoring wants every pupil to succeed.

Building the essential teacher toolkit

Being exposed to pupils of different ages within a school environment gives you experiences that cannot be gained elsewhere. Volunteering was a great opportunity to develop skills, such as learning to adapt to different school systems, learning to communicate in a clear and effective manner and time management, to name a few.

Comprehensive resources

The workbooks are easy to find on the platform. They are very comprehensive giving you everything you need to facilitate a session.

Aimilia Volunteer

The workbook was very easy to understand. It only took me one session to get used to the teaching platform.

Eilidh, volunteer tutor

I would say [volunteering] has contributed a lot to where I am now. Being able to include Action Tutoring in my personal statement this year, and just as an experience, in general has been a massive help. Working with Action Tutoring has really allowed me to come out of my shell in a way that has been really fun.

National impact from a single screen

I’ve been able to see a variety of  pupils from different schools all across England and gain a better understanding of the mind of a child, and how absorbent they are!

Jack University student

I’m learning a new skill really. I did not work with young people in my NHS work particularly.

Sometimes it seems as if pupils have become more confident and interested and that is the aim. A couple of the Year 6 girls told me they do maths invented problems at home for fun in the evenings.
