Welcome to Action Tutoring!

We are an ambitious new social initiative, seeking to provide free tuition to GCSE pupils in inner-city London schools, working with volunteer tutors.

Working in partnership with inner city schools across London, we provide volunteer tutors to work with pupils, to help those pupils on the D/C borderline in English and Maths at GCSE level to achieve 5 A*-C GCSEs including English and Maths. Achieving this significantly improves pupils' chances of going on to further education, employment or training. Many schools have reported that often pupils are on track to achieve a C or above in either English or Maths, but the challenge is helping them to achieve this in both subjects.

In Spring 2011 Action Tutoring ran a pilot programme with schools in Hackney and Peckham, tutoring pupils who had been predicted D or E grades in either English or Maths. The results showed that 75% of those tutored went on to achieve at least a C in the subject in which they were tutored, and overall achieved 5 A*-Cs including both English and Maths.

Following this success, and thanks to funding from the Shine Trust, we are currently working with 12 schools across London and are aiming to work with 30-40 schools in 2013. Action Tutoring is being incubated by the Act Network, a registered charity that seeks to help effective social action interventions scale up across London.

"The student that I tutored regularly was very engaged, she tried hard during the sessions. One thing that struck me was how friendly and generally good the kids were. It was very different to the horror stories portrayed in the press."
-- Volunteer Tutor, Peckham
