Welcome to Action Tutoring!

Action Tutoring is an ambitious new social initiative and registered charity, providing free tuition to GCSE pupils in inner-city London schools, working with volunteer tutors. Action Tutoring's mission is to tackle educational disadvantage through making tuition more widely accessible, to enable more young people able to reach their potential in life, regardless of background.

Working in partnership with inner city schools across London, we provide volunteer tutors to work with pupils, to help those pupils on the D/C borderline in English and Maths at GCSE level to achieve 5 A*-C GCSEs including English and Maths. Achieving this significantly improves pupils' chances of going on to further education, employment or training. Many schools have reported that often pupils are on track to achieve a C or above in either English or Maths, but the challenge is helping them to achieve this in both subjects.

Action Tutoring has grown rapidly in the 2 years since it began; from an initial pilot programme with just 2 schools, it is now operating in 30 schools in London supporting nearly 1000 GCSE pupils and is currently piloting with 4 schools in Manchester, with a view to expanding further beyond London.

Endorsement from London Mayor, Boris Johnson

"Action Tutoring makes decisive interventions at the critical time to help struggling pupils achieve C grades in English and Maths at GCSE. The evidence proves it works. By lifting children up through the 5A*-C barrier, they transform their life chances. And what makes them even more wonderful people is, they are all volunteers." "London was the first city to benefit from Action Tutoring and I am delighted that they are now expending to help children in other cities across the country. More power to their elbow."

- GCSE Results! Of the 250 pupils tutored last year, 60% improved from predicted D's or E's to a C or above in the subject in which they were tutored. Not surprisingly, results were slightly better for Maths than for English, but despite the GCSE English fiasco this year, we still saw many pupils improve. Of pupils tutored for Maths at the Lambeth Academy, 75% went from a predicted D or E to a C or above. At the Peckham Academy, overall 80% of pupils tutored improved in both English and Maths from a D or E to a C or above. Well done to all the pupils and tutors for their efforts!

"Very few projects have this level of impact on student engagement and progress. The energy and commitment from tutors and tutees is palpable."
-- Hyder Dastagir, Headteacher, London Nautical School.

"The student that I tutored regularly was very engaged, she tried hard during the sessions. One thing that struck me was how friendly and generally good the kids were. It was very different to the horror stories portrayed in the press."
-- Volunteer Tutor, Peckham
"The Saturday mentoring has really helped me with my Maths, because it has given me a chance to go over some of the topics I didn't do so well in previously. Max has been very helpful and friendly."
